If left untreated, detrusor external sphincter dyssynergia (DESD) can result in:
- Vesicoureteral reflux—Urine flowing backwards from the bladder to the urethra; may cause incontinence
- UTI—Upper and lower urinary tract infections
- Hydronephrosis—Enlargement of the kidneys and the renal pelvis (the structure that drains urine from the kidneys)
- Kidney stones—Occur when the urine has a high level of minerals that form stones
- Renal insufficiency or failure—Occurs when the filtering function of the kidneys change and they are no longer able to maintain healthy body function
- Due to these potentially severe consequences, urologists carefully manage patients with DESD so that excessive bladder pressures do not occur.
