Deactivation button (Acticon Pump)
This small button can be felt on the upper, hard part of the pump.
Deductible
A specified amount of money a member must pay before insurance benefits begin. Usually expressed in terms of an ""annual"" amount.
Defecation
The discharge of stool from the rectum and out through the anus.
Detrusor muscle
Smooth muscle in the wall of the urinary bladder that contracts the bladder to expel urine.
Detrusor-External Sphincter Dyssynergia (DESD)
A condition caused when the bladder muscles try to contract to empty the bladder, but the external sphincter muscle will not open. This makes it difficult or impossible for you to urinate. Patients have DESD because some of their nerves have been damaged by injury or disease.
Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG)
A system of classification for inpatient hospital services based on diagnosis, age, sex, and the presence of complications. It is used as a means of identifying costs for providing services associated with a diagnosis and as a mechanism to reimburse hospital and selected other providers for services rendered.
Dilate
Widening of the opening of an orifice.
Dilation & Curettage (D&C)
Procedure done in which the opening of the cervix is widened and instruments are passed into the cervix to scrape or suction the lining of the uterus.
Dilation (UroLume for Stricture)
Enlarging the diameter of a strictured area by passing tubes of gradually increasing width through the strictured area.
Distal
Away from the origin or center of the body.
Distention
State of being distended or enlarged.
Dribbling after urination
Passing a small amount of urine after the completion of urination.
Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding (DUB)
Abnormal uterine bleeding usually resulting from hormone inbalance as compared to the presence of pathology.
Dysmenorrhea
Difficult or painful menstrual flow.
Ectopic Pregnancy
A pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus; also called a tubal pregnancy.
Ejaculation
The discharge of semen from the urine canal.
Encrusted (UroLume)
Stone-like formations that attach to the prosthesis.
Endometrial basal layer
Base layer of the endometrium that marks end of endometrium and start of myometrium.
Endometrial biopsy
The removal of an endometrial tissue sample for microscopic examination.
Endometritis
Inflammation of the endometrium.
Endometrium
"The inner most wall of the uterus that is shed each month during menstruation. It forms a lining of mucous membrane that is composed of three layers of tissue: a compact internal surface layer (mucosa), a spongy middle layer (sub-mucosa) and an outer layer that attaches the endometrium to the myometrium (basalis). The thickness changes during the different uterine phases of the menstrual cycle."
Endoprosthesis
"A hollow mesh tube which is placed into a blocked passage, such as the urine canal, to allow drainage through the blocked passage."
Endourethral
Within the urethra.
Epidural
A method used to decrease or eliminate discomfort during surgery. A small needle or catheter is placed in the epidural canal along the spine and anesthetic is delivered to induce localized numbing.
Erosion
Erosion is when the tissue next to any part of an implanted device is worn away.
Estrogen
A female hormone produced mainly by the ovaries. Estrogen is largely responsible for stimulating the endometrium to thicken during the first half of the menstrual cycle. The level of estrogen present directly effects the amount of endometrium.
Eumenorrhea
Normal menstrual flow.
Exclusive provider organization (EPO)
A term derived from the phrase preferred provider organization (PPO). However, where a PPO generally extends coverage for non-preferred provider services as well as preferred provider services, an EPO provides coverage only for contracted providers; hence, the term exclusive. Technically, many HMOs can also be described EPOs.
Experience rating
The process of setting rates partially or in whole on evaluating previous claims experience for a specific group or pool of groups.
External os
Opening of cervix that extends into the vagina.
External urinary sphincter
A muscle around the urine canal that opens and closes to allow the flow of urine.
Fallopian tubes
The tubes or duct through which the ovum travel to the uterus from the ovary.
False passage
Cavity created, usually by uterine sound or dilator, that creates the appearance of a false uterine cavity.
Fecal impaction
Fecal impaction occurs when a large mass of hardened stool collects in the colon or anal canal and cannot be passed from the body.
Federal qualification
A status defined by the HMO Act, conferred by HCFA after conducting an extensive evaluation of the HMO's organization and operations. An organization must be federally qualified or be designated as a CMP (competitive medical plan) to be eligible to participate in Medicare cost and risk contracts. Likewise, an HMO must be federally qualified or State plan defined to participate in the Medicaid managed care program.
Fee-For-Service (FFS)
A payment system by which doctors, hospitals and other providers are paid a specific amount for each service performed as identified by a claim for payment.
Fertility
The ability to produce offspring.
Fiscal soundness
The requirement that managed care organizations have sufficient operating funds, on hand or available in reserve, to cover all expenses associated with services for which they have assumed financial risk.
Fluid overload
Serious or fatal condition created when patient absorbs too much distention fluid during hysteroscopy.
Forceps
An instrument resembling tweezers that is used to grasp objects within the urine canal or other parts of the body.
Frequency
A need to urinate often.
Fundus of the uterus
Upper third of the uterus.
