- Gatekeeper
- An arrangement in which a primary care provider serves as the patient's agent, arranges for and coordinates appropriate medical care and other necessary and appropriate referrals.
- General anesthesia
- Drug induced depression of the central nervous system. Results in unconsciousness and loss of reflexes and muscle tone.
- General or spinal anesthetic
- Drugs used to bring on sleep during surgery so that pain is not felt.
- Genital
- All parts of the reproductive system. The visible body parts are commonly referred to as genitals.
- Gland
- An organ or group of cells that produces secretions.
- Group Model HMO
- An HMO that contracts with a group practice of physicians to provide services to enrollees. These contracts can be either exclusive (the group can only treat plan members), or non-exclusive (the practices are free to contract with other plans and see fee-for-service patients). The latter are often referred to as Network models.
- Group or Network HMO
- An HMO that contracts with one or more independent group practices to provide services to its members in one or more locations.
- Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
- An entity that provides, offers or arranges for coverage of designated health services needed by members for a fixed, prepaid premium. There are three basic models of HMOs: group model, individual practice association (IPA), and staff model.
- Hematoma
- Contained mass of blood.
- Hematometra
- Accumulation of blood in the uterus.
- Hemoturia
- Blood in the urine.
- Hesitancy
- Delayed start of urine flow after the need to urinate is felt and the person wishes to urinate.
- Hormone
- A chemical substance produced by the body that has a specific regulatory effect on a target organ.
- Hyperplasia
- Abnormal overgrowth of the endometrium or other tissue.
- Hypomenorrhea
- Menstrual flow that is decreased from what is normal for that woman.
- Hysterectomy
- Removal of the uterus.
- Hysteroscopy
- Visualization of the inside of the uterus utilizing a scope.
- I.V. Sedation
- Form of local anesthesia where medications are administered to the patient intravenously.
- Impotence
- An inability to attain or sustain an erection of the penis.
- In-Fast Female Sling System
- Trademark for female sling system from American Medical Systems; sling anchored to bone transvaginally to support urethra and restore urinary control.
- Incision
- A surgical cut into tissue or an organ of the body.
- Incontinence
- The inability to control release of urine from the bladder (see also Urinary Incontinence).
- Incontinence from surgery
- Urinary incontinence that can occur following hysterectomies, Cesarean sections, prostatectomies and lower intestinal or rectal procedures.
- Independent Practice Association (IPA) HMO
- An "HMO without walls," in which patients choose doctors from a select list and are treated at the physicians' private offices. IPA physicians are free to contract with more than one HMO at a time, as well as see fee-for-service patients.
- Individual Practice Association (IPA) Model HMO
- An HMO that contracts with individual practitioners or an association of individual practices to provide health care services in return for a negotiated fee. The individual practice association, in turn, compensates its physicians on a per capita, fee schedule, or other agreed basis.
- Indwelling catheter
- A small, hollow tube inserted into the urethra to drain urine from the bladder into a leg bag; can be either temporary or in place 24 hours a day.
- Infection
- Infection can happen with any surgery. It occurs when bacteria or virus enter the body through the incisions. It can happen during surgery or after surgery when the wound is healing. If it occurs after an implant surgery, the implant may have to be removed.
- Instrumentation (UroLume)
- Using medical tools within the urine canal.
- Insurance commissioner
- A state insurance official who is charged with solvency regulation and market regulation of insurance companies doing business in the state. Solvency regulation seeks to protect policyholders against the risk that insurers will not be able to meet their financial obligations. Market regulation attempts to ensure fair and reasonable insurance prices, products and trade practices.
- Intermittent claudication

- Internal os
- The internal opening of the cervix into the uterus.
- Interstices
- Spaces or gaps in a tissue or structure of an organ.
- InVance Male Sling
- A procedure from American Medical Systems that is used to treat male stress urinary incontinence by attaching a sling to the pubic bone on either side of the urethra to restore more normal control of urine.
- Irresolvable detrursor hyperreflexia
- Similar to bladder instability except that it is caused by a nervous system disorder, like a stroke or multiple sclerosis.
