Patient Selection

Some physicians recommend that the following conditions be met before treating stress urinary incontinence with the AMS 800:

  • Incontinence has been present for at least 6 months
  • The patient is motivated to use the device
  • The patient has adequate manual dexterity and mental acuity to operate the pump
  • The patient's urine is sterile
  • The patient has a bladder capacity of at least 200cc
  • The patient is able to empty his bladder completely
  • The patient has a urine flow rate greater than 10 mL/second

The device is contraindicated in patients:

  • Who are poor candidates for surgical procedures and/or anesthesia due to physical or mental conditions
  • With chronic urinary tract infections
  • With urinary incontinence due to or complicated by an irreversibly obstructed lower urinary tract
  • With irresolvable detrusor hyperreflexia or bladder instability
